Kids, Photos and Fun

If those 3 words don't go together in your mind, don't worry. I'm going to give you a few tips on how to be less stressed and more prepared (with hopefully a positive attitude) on taking... dun, dun, dun.. Family Pictures with your littles. Haha.

Family photoshoots are a wonderful way to capture precious memories with your children! However, getting kids to cooperate in front of the camera can sometimes be a challenge. With a little preparation and some creative strategies, we can ensure that your session goes smoothly and that we capture those genuine smiles and moments of joy. Below are 8 tips to help prepare your kids for a fun and stress-free photoshoot.

1. Talk About the Photoshoot in Advance

Children often do better when they know what to expect, so it’s a good idea to talk to them about the photoshoot a few days, (or if you have a very curious, never stops asking questions kiddo, like my child) a day in advance. Explain that it will be a fun time where they get to spend time with the family, play, and have their picture taken. You might even show them some photos from previous shoots or examples of what the session will look like.

Frame the photoshoot as an exciting event. Let them know they’ll get to play with you, and maybe even do something special afterward, like going out for ice cream. (Only promise this if you can do it. Even something simple like watching a show with them can work.)

2. Choose Comfortable Clothing

Kids are more likely to cooperate when they’re comfortable, so choose outfits that they like and that are easy to move around in. Avoid anything too restrictive or that they might find itchy or uncomfortable. It’s also a good idea to bring along a backup outfit in case of spills or unexpected messes.

If they're big enough take them shopping and agree on some outfits or just shop their closet and choose some pre-approved looks you already both love. (Remember to keep it in solid colors or subtle patterns so we can focus on their beautiful smiles.)

For Babies and Toddlers: Ensure their clothing is soft and not too bulky, so they can move freely. Consider layers, as they’re easy to adjust for temperature changes.

3. Plan Around Nap and Meal Times

Timing is everything when it comes to photographing children. Schedule the shoot at a time when your kids are typically well-rested and well-fed. Avoid nap times or late in the day when they’re likely to be tired or cranky if you can.

Many photographers like to capture at golden hour, but are more than happy to accommodate you with a different time if that's what works best for your family.

A well-rested, well-fed child is much more likely to be in a good mood and ready to smile for the camera.

Bring along some snacks and drinks to keep their energy up during the shoot. Just make sure the snacks aren’t too messy or likely to stain their clothes.

(Honey Nut Cheerios and water will do the trick or something equally clear and easy to pack.)

4. Bring Favorite Toys or Comfort Items

Sometimes, having a favorite toy or comfort item on hand can help your child feel more at ease during the photoshoot. Whether it’s a beloved stuffed animal, a small toy, or a blanket, having something familiar can be a great way to keep them calm and happy.

We can even incorporate their favorite toy into a few shots—it can add a personal touch and help capture your child’s personality at this stage in their life. And usually they will warm up enough to take a few photos without it.

5. Keep Things Light and Fun

Children are naturally playful and energetic, so let’s embrace that during the photoshoot! We can play games, tell jokes, or have a little dance party to keep things lively and fun. The goal is to capture genuine expressions, so encouraging your kids to have fun is key to getting those natural smiles.

6. Be Patient and Flexible

Kids can be unpredictable, and that’s okay! If your child isn’t cooperating right away, don’t worry. We can take breaks, let them run around a bit, or try different activities to keep them engaged. The most important thing is to stay patient and flexible. Sometimes the best photos come from those unplanned moments of spontaneity.

If you feel yourself getting stressed, take a deep breath and remember that the session is about capturing real, authentic moments—imperfections and all.

7. Reward Good Behavior

Incentives can be a great motivator for kids. Let them know that if they cooperate during the photoshoot, there’s a fun reward waiting for them afterward. It could be a treat, a visit to the playground, or an extra story at bedtime. Knowing that something special is coming can help encourage them to stay focused and engaged.

You can even use small rewards during the shoot—like a sticker—if they’re doing a great job and need a little extra encouragement.

8. Trust the Process

Finally, trust that we’ll capture beautiful moments, even if everything doesn’t go perfectly according to plan. Kids are wonderfully unpredictable, and sometimes the most memorable photos come from those unexpected moments. Our goal is to make the experience as enjoyable as possible for everyone, and to create images that you’ll treasure for years to come.

Wrapping Up

No one knows your child better than you. So, plan ahead according to what temperament they have. If your child is on the shy side, plan a session where they'll have plenty of time to warm up. If your child does better on calmer days and in mellow environments, plan the session on a free day where they won't be overwhelmed. Do what you feel is best for them and yourself.

Preparing your kids for a photoshoot doesn’t have to be stressful. With a little planning, patience, and a focus on fun, we can create a relaxed and enjoyable experience for everyone involved. Remember, the best photos are often the ones that capture your children being themselves—laughing, playing, and simply enjoying the moment.
